From “dispose” to “circulate”: the cutting edge of recycled plastics and circular resource innovation
Topics such as advanced use of recycled and waste plastics, LCA and traceability, and resource circulation schemes at the urban and regional level are often discussed in the context of sustainability and decarbonization.
At the same time, they represent a major challenge for universities and research institutes: how to translate research outcomes into real-world implementation and how to build collaborations with companies and local governments.
In this DOIC Metaverse Tour on December 16, themed “Nature/Climate × Tech (Recycled Plastics & Resource Circulation Innovation)”, we will:
- Dive into the latest advances in microorganisms and enzymes that “decompose and metabolize” plastics
- Explore concepts for circular plastics that embed circularity from the design stage
Building on the latest insights from Osaka Metropolitan University and Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), we will discuss how these research seeds can be implemented in society and how they might lead to collaborative and contract research with companies.
This tour is a great opportunity not only to grasp trends in fields close to your own research, but also to gain concrete hints for future university–industry collaboration.
Benefits of joining this tour
- Access to the latest technology seeds for advanced utilization of recycled and waste plastics (material / chemical recycling)
- Insights into a new wave of manufacturing and product design that aims to improve recyclability from the design stage (Design for Circularity)
- Opportunities to spark collaborative research, contract research, and technical consulting, through direct contact with corporate professionals in new business and sustainability divisions

What’s DOIC(Digital Open Innovation Campus)
DOIC is a project to build a global ecosystem of open innovation by industry, academia, and government on the occasion of the Osaka-Kansai Expo in 2025. It is a campus where people from around the world can share issues, seek solutions, and disseminate results.
In the metaverse provided by DOIC, various digital contents, including technological seeds, can be disseminated to the world and communicated anytime, anywhere. Industry, academia, government, municipalities, cultural figures, and citizens can collaborate through DOIC to form an organic network with people around the world.
